Shingles on the roof and exterior of the Cape Cod Clematis give it a rustic appearance. This home design features interesting star shaped angles that is modern. The utility room and the two secondary bedrooms are the only rectangular rooms.

Entering the home, is a wide foyer with a small bathroom to one side and a coat closet on the other. The entry hall leads past the naturally bright living room, then directly into the dining room, located at the core of this home. Columns grace the dining area, adding a touch of class while delineating the space. Clerestory windows, above the vaulted dining room, fill the space in abundant, natural light.

In the adjacent diamond-shaped family room, two sets of French doors trim the fireplace and open onto a wide wrap-around deck. The eating bar separates the kitchen from the family room. Features here include a walk-in pantry, island with cooktop, dishwasher, built-in oven and microwave. The adjacent utility room has a deep sink and a counter. Garage access is close to both the utility room and the kitchen.

French doors, opposite the dining room, open into the elegant owners' suite. Luxury features here include a large walk-in closet, oversized tub, dual vanity and a private toilet.

Featured House Plan of the Week, Mediterranean House Plan, Home Plan, Cortez 11-011

The three-bedroom Cortez is a Mediterranean-style stucco home designed for a narrow lot with the zero lot line concept in mind. It's only 38 feet wide and has no windows on the right side.

The zero lot line concept is brought into play when additional privacy is desired along one of the building lot lines, or when a builder wishes to construct two mirror-image units in a duplex configuration. This allows each of the units to have one wide side yard instead of two narrow ones.

If desired, windows could be added, but the home is already richly glassed and naturally bright. The rear of the home has more window area than wall, facing out across a covered terrace that can be screened. Sliding glass doors provide access from the kitchen/nook area as well as the owners' suite.

From the dining room, you look into an enclosed courtyard through wide windows, crowned by an arched transom. Inside, a columned archway echoes the graceful curves of the windows and defines the areas of the dining room and the vaulted living room.

The kitchen offers plentiful counter and storage space. A powder room is centrally located, close to the front door and a walk-through utility room that opens into the garage.

Features in the owners' suite include a walk-in closet, linen storage, oversized shower, twin vanities and a private toilet. A small arched window brightens the stairwell leading upstairs to two additional bedrooms that share a jack and jill bathroom.

Featured House Plan of the Week, Cottage Duplex Plan, Duplex Design, Philipsburg 60-030

The Philipsburg is a duplex with the charm of a country cottage. Garage walls provide privacy between units and are the only point of contact between the units, even the covered patios are completely private. Each of the two-story units are mirror images of one another.

Slender posts set on wood-framed bases highlight and support an entry porch capped by a low profile gable. Wooden siding covers a half wall that creates another secluded area in the porch section extending from the door to the outer post. The area is relaxing place to enjoy a lemonade on a summer afternoon.

Once inside, a coat closet is in an alcove hidden behind the front door. The living and dining areas are all open to the kitchen across a raised eating bar. Light flows into the living areas through wide multipaned windows on exterior wall. More streams in through a smaller window over the sink. Kitchen counters and cabinets line two walls, plus the peninsular counter/eating bar. A combination utility room and powder room is at the rear, as well as access to the covered patio.

The patio creates a cozy place to enjoy outdoor dining when the weather is warm. Walled on two sides, could easily be screened if desired.

Two bedrooms and a full bathroom with linen storage are upstairs in each of the units. Both bedrooms are expanded by rectangular window bays, which could easily be finished as cozy window seats with storage below.

Craftsman House Plan, Home Plan, Woodcliffe 30-715

The bold wooden beams of the porte cochere and entry, springs to mind is an upscale lodge, or a Northwestern-style chalet. Either designation could easily fit this one level Craftsman-style home.

Past the vaulted porte cochere is a vaulted breezeway that leads to a lofty vaulted porch. Handsome squared wooden posts support and accent the whole passageway. Entering the home, you step into a beautiful vaulted great room, that is richly windowed at the rear. A fireplace and home entertainment center line the right side wall. If you like the feel of Craftsman lodge-style, you will fall in love with the Woodcliffe.

Two of the great room's five window sets slide open to provide air flow and access to a large patio, part of which is covered and vaulted. On the left of the great room is an unusually long, multi-angled eating bar which marks the kitchen's boundary.

More light flows into the kitchen through a skylight. Working at the cook top or handy prep sink, you look into the great room and can enjoy the rear vista too. A bayed nook is at one end and a large walk-in pantry is at the other, right around the corner from a large home office with a free-standing woodstove. Counters, shelves and a desk with file drawers are all built into this skylit space, as is a closet that fills the rear wall.

Storage closets line the hallway on the right, which leads to a vaulted den and the owners' suite. Luxuries here include a double-wide walk-in closet and a skylit bathroom with a soaking tub and an oversized walk-in shower. Two additional bedrooms, a vaulted family room and a double-entry bathroom are in the left wing of the home.

2016 Home from the Heart Survey Results

What makes up a dream home? Is it the view? The square footage? The walk-in shower or Craftsman-style kitchen? Does such a house that combines all of your dreams even exist?

Knowing the answers to these questions is what Associated Designs’ Home from the Heart survey is all about. This year’s survey once again asked readers, like you, to share what features and design elements you want in your dream home. The results of the survey allow Associated Designs to create a collection of home designs that feature all of those wants and desires.

The 2016 Home from the Heart survey focused on every element of the home – from the size to the style to special features to the number of rooms. Using the most voted on features, Associated Designs has created the Westheart 10-630 home plan that highlights the must-have design essentials from the survey. Featuring 3,135 square feet of living space in a single floor layout, the home includes all the popular features including a walk-in shower, covered front porch, great room, utility room located close to the garage, and plenty of windows for natural light and scenic views.

The Westheart 10-630

Unlike last year when the Craftsman house was the sought-after exterior home style, this year’s survey revealed that both the ranch and Craftsman homes were neck and neck in terms of popularity. This coincides with the continued trend toward larger, single-floor homes on rural lots with open floor plans.

Survey respondents voiced their preferences for 3 bedrooms, but as in 2015, kitchen nooks and dens remained similarly popular. Media rooms, however, lost momentum replaced by a desire for a guest suite, which climbed 10% in popularity. The Westheart home plan showcases just such a guest suite. It also keeps the owners’ suite separate from the other bedrooms for added privacy, and a luxurious owners’ bath with walk-in shower. In fact, one of the biggest trends in the survey continues to be the desire for walk-in showers in the owners’ suite, which climbed to 81%.

The Westheart design also features a great room with a gas fireplace and vaulted ceilings, providing both artistic elegance and warm strength to the home. Vaulted ceilings, much like gas fireplaces, are still a must-have for homeowners.

The 2016 Home from the Heart survey is all about what you want and desire. It gives you a say in what pieces go together to make the home of your dreams. Associated Designs Westheart home design makes that dream a reality.
