Maumee's detailing unmistakably Colonial

It's easy to mistake the Maumee for a colonial home built way back before the Revolution. Guest designer Rod Pfotenhauer of Toledo, Ohio, included all the right details, including a symmetrical arrangement of small-paned windows, a side-gabled roof, and a paneled front door crowned by a triangular pediment.

Granted, the attached two-car garage is a contemporary modification. But shuttered windows and a lofty cupola help it blend well with the colonial theme.

Inside, the dining room and living room are right where you'd expect to find them -- to the right and left of the entry. A classic chair rail, with panel molding below, skirts the dining room. But the generously sized country kitchen, spanning most of the rear, is a '90s innovation.

The section devoted to food preparation is U-shaped, with counters and cupboards on three sides. One segment doubles as an eating bar. Storage capacity is augmented by a pantry with five shelves. Stairs to the basement and second floor are centrally located.

That leaves about two-thirds of the room free for comfortable furniture, a home entertainment center, a computer, shelves jumbled with books, games and videos -- whatever the family needs for relaxation and entertainment. At the far end of the vaulted room, a floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace serves as a focal point and provides additional heat in winter. A large laundry room and powder room is between the kitchen and garage.

Upstairs you'll find a sumptuous master suite and two secondary bedrooms that share a bathroom. Luxuries in the Maumee's master bath include a walk-in closet, naturally illuminated whirlpool bath, twin lavs, and an enclosed shower and water closet.
