Cape Cod House Plans

Cape Cod house plans originated during the 17th century in New England. Pilgrims used this design style to provide safety during New England’s harsh stormy winter climate. Colonists used natural resources for their building materials, making shingles from cedar trees. Small panes of glass were used to make large windows as the smaller panes were less likely to break over the long voyage from England. Chimneys were central to provide heating through the home.

The traditional Cape Cod home plan is characterized by a simple low, symmetrically designed broad framed building, pitched roof with end gables, central front door surrounded by multi-paned windows on each side and have minimal exterior detailing. Classic Cape Cod style house plans are covered in unpainted shingles that with prolonged exposure turns an earthly gray color. Windows are typically surrounded by shutters. Interior spaces of the Cape Cod house plan are open and generous. Garages of the Cape Cod home are usually detached.
