Benton's porch detailing adds charm
The Benton is too long and narrow to be shoe horned into a standard city lot. But despite the need for elbow room, you couldn't honestly call this home large. Medium describes the size more aptly.
On the other hand, this plan has so many vaulted ceilings that it has the feel of a much larger home. And a descending staircase is included in the design, in case the owners wish to add more space by building over a basement.
Exterior styling draws inspiration from both ranch and contemporary design. The basic shape is ranch, as are the covered porch and the "z" detailing on shutters and garage doors. A stepped garage, and high arched windows in the living room add a contemporary touch.
All of the large rooms are vaulted -- living room, family room and master bedroom -- along with the entry, which puts you right at the center of the home. Family living areas dominate the middle segment, with children's bedrooms on one end and the master suite on the other.
Basically rectangular, the kitchen is expanded by a sun bright eating nook and a garden window. Other features include a built in dishwasher, range and oven, microwave, desk and pantry. An eating bar marks the boundary between the kitchen and a large family room. Living room and dining room are at the front of the house.
The master suite has a private bathroom with enclosed shower and water closet, and walk in closet. Sliding doors open onto a deck. The bedrooms at the other end of the house share a dual compartment bathroom, allowing a modicum of privacy for two people at once.
The utility room is nearby, convenient to the garage as well as to the Benton's bedrooms and kitchen.
