Sedgewicke melds contemporary country

The Sedgewicke is a two-story contemporary home with a country flavor. The hip roof and double-decker bay windows are features you'll see on many recently built homes, while the shuttered multi-paned windows and friendly covered porch hark back to simpler times. Designed with a side-opening garage, this plan requires a corner lot or acreage.

Family living spaces are downstairs, bedrooms above. Standing on the second-floor landing, you overlook a lofty two-story entry brightened by a round window on the upper level. The formal living room and dining room are to the right. Glass doors in the dining room open onto a deck or patio, and a pocket door between kitchen and dining room provides full separation when desired.

On the informal left side, an eating bar joins the kitchen to the nook and family room. Wide windows are at both ends of this large open space. The sliders at the rear make outdoor dining a breeze, and there's a small powder room, quickly accessible from the garage.

Upstairs, the master suite is as large as the living room and dining room combined. Features here include two closets and a private bath with oversized shower and double vanity. Of the two secondary bedrooms, the front one is the most striking. It has a longer closet, plus a bay window that makes a great location for a window seat, or a desk with a view.

The Sedgewicke's long bonus room, over the garage, is ideal for storage or play. With the addition of skylights, it could be put to many other uses.
