Selkirk has airy interior, friendly facade
Gabled dormers combine with a railed porch and an oval glass door to give the Selkirk a decidedly cheerful and welcoming look. This midsized family home has a bright and spacious great room, but no living room, reflecting the contemporary preference for relaxed gathering spaces over formal rooms.
Vaulted ceilings throughout most of the ground floor expand the airy sense of openness. Along the rear wall in the great room, light spills in through windows that flank the fireplace and wide sliders that open onto a small patio. A side window in the nook adds still more natural illumination.
A large kitchen with plenty of counter space is at the heart of the family living area. Standing in the kitchen, you can keep an eye on happenings in the great room or back yard. The long eating bar is handy for munching down quick meals and snacks, or for chatting with the cooks and cleanup crew while they work.
Bay windows expand the front room. A pocket door slides open for kitchen access, closed for separation from the clatter of dishes, or children playing in the great room. If this room is not furnished as a dining room, the bright window bay makes a pleasant location for a desk or sewing table.
Utilities, coat closet, a small bathroom, and garage access are across the hall.
The Selkirk's master suite, while not huge, does boast a luxurious bathroom complete with soaking tub, double vanity, and separate shower. A pocket door offers steam containment and added privacy.
Both of the upstairs bedrooms have boxed bays, ideal for cozy window seats.
