Ackerman a cut above most duplexes

The Ackerman is clearly a cut or two above most duplexes. For starters, unit B is set back about two feet further from the street than unit A, and each has a recessed front porch. The set back is visually interesting, and the porches provide a sense of privacy.

Double walls, sometimes called party walls, offer plenty of sound buffering between the living rooms and kitchens of the two units. Having the bedrooms on opposite ends of the building assures totally private sleeping environments as well.

Since the units are mirror images except for the set back, a description of one will serve for both. When you step into the entry, family living spaces are on one side, a coat closet is right in front of you, and direct access to the garage is on the opposite side.

Another unusual feature is the lofty, vaulted living/dining area. The high ceiling creates an expansive sense of openness here, and the space is naturally bright on all but the darkest days. Plenty of natural light washes in through wide, gridded windows at the front, plus a multipaned, clerestory window above, nestled under a small gable.

Toward the back, the ceiling level drops and flattens out over the kitchen. A raised eating bar also marks this juncture, as does an overhead plant shelf.

Stove, sink and refrigerator cluster in a tight, step-efficient triangle here, convenient for meal preparation and clean up. Cupboards and counters are amply supplied. Counters wrap around three sides, while a floor-to-ceiling pantry boosts available shelf space.

Storage closets line the hallway to the Ackerman's bedrooms and a two-section bathroom. The rear bedroom is slightly larger.
