click photograph for more plan details

The Keystone is much larger than it looks from the front. This two-level contemporary Craftsman bungalow offers nearly 3,000 square feet of living space. Tapered stone veneer twin-column supports, decorative gable accents, and characteristic windows combine to create that nostalgic Craftsman look.

It’s designed for construction on a lot that slopes down on the right and to the rear. Approximately a third of the indoor living area is in the daylight basement, which is invisible from the front.

A window-bright vaulted great room sits at the core of the main floor, directly ahead of the wide foyer. Gathering spaces, formal and informal, fill the left wing, while a luxurious owners’ suite takes up most of the right wing.

Double doors next to the foyer lead into an expansive room brightened by a bay window. This could be furnished as a parlor, den, home office, or whatever suits. It has a roomy storage closet.

Flames in the see-through fireplace can be enjoyed from the dining room, kitchen, and nook as well as the great room. Kitchen features include: a long, flush eating bar and roomy walk-in pantry, along with generous cupboard and counter space. Windows in front of the sink overlook a covered deck.

The spa tub in the luxurious owners’ suite is centrally located, allowing one person to chat with another in the sleeping area or lavatory room while soaking away the day’s tensions. Other amenities include: dual vanities, private toilet, and a large walk-in closet.

Two more bedrooms are in the Keystone’s basement, along with a generously sized utility room and a spacious family room with another fireplace. Sliding glass doors open onto a covered patio.

Farmhouse Plan Amarillo 31-139

click photograph for more plan details

Land doesn't have to be plentiful to enjoy a country retreat. The Amarillo packs spacious, amenity-rich rooms into a classic farmhouse exterior able to fit on just about any narrow lot.

An elegant, minimalistic exterior features gabled roofing with batt and board ends, walls of lap siding and stone accents. A single raised trim post frames a front door set back beneath a covered porch, for a warm, rustic effect.

But step inside and find living spaces oozing contemporary charm.

Through the front door, an entry contains a staircase and an opening to the left, which reveals a roomy, flexible den. With front-facing windows and a closet, this space is among the most versatile in the home, and can easily be converted into a home office or guest bedroom. A full bathroom is easily accessible just beyond the den from the entry.

Past the bathroom, the entry steps out into an open kitchen, dining and great room. This open floor plan creates multiple gathering spaces within a larger, shared space that occupies much of the ground floor.

Two walls of kitchen counters wrap around a refrigerator, dishwasher, double bowl sink, cooktop stove and oven. They surround a large island with an eating bar, perfect for an additional food prep area, or just to enjoy a meal. There is plenty of food storage space in a walk-in pantry beneath the staircase to the right, and additional storage shelves lay just beyond.

The kitchen opens straight ahead to a dining room, and connects seamlessly to the spacious great room. Anchored by a fireplace in the corner, the great room's connectivity with the kitchen and the dining room makes the entire space ideal for entertaining guests or just enjoying as a cozy retreat for the family. Sliding glass doors open out from the dining room to a covered rear patio.

While these spaces emphasize openness, the owners' suite puts a premium on privacy. An opening off of the great room reveals a utility room through a sliding pocket door, while a door to the left opens to the luxurious owners' suite. Rear-facing windows stream in light, and a sliding door opens to the owners' bath with a stand-in shower, double sink vanity and private toilet. The owners' suite also boasts a large walk-in closet with a shelving system that can be designed to an owners' tastes.

Back near the utility room, another door opens to the two-car garage, with a side door exiting out to a concrete walkway. The garage also contains a pull-down attic access.

But there is more to see than attic space above. Back in the entry, take the staircase up to reach the Amarillo's upstairs loft and two secondary bedrooms. Another versatile living space, the loft could be an ideal conversion to a play room, library or more. The bedrooms are located on either side of the loft, with a shared full bathroom and linen closet.

Small Ranch House Plan Glenhaven 30-927 Photograph

click photograph for more plan details

Shingle siding, Craftsman-style windows and stone veneer column supports put a warm, natural face on the contemporary Glenhaven. Inside this small home, wide expanses of glass brighten the vaulted family gathering spaces that flow together at the rear.

Entering via the covered porch, you step into a hallway that leads straight ahead to the expansive vaulted area. Along the way, you pass double doors on the right that open into a den. Its location makes it ideal for a home office. It could also be outfitted as a guest room, fourth bedroom, art studio, exercise room, or whatever suits.

Two nearly identical bedrooms and a bathroom are to the left of the entry hall. One has a front window; the other has a side window.

The vaulted ceiling in the living/dining area slopes up from the entry hall, then down at the rear. A direct vent gas fireplace nestles into one rear corner. On the opposite side of the room, a peninsular eating bar bounds the kitchen. Sliding glass doors in the dining area access a partially covered patio flanked by slender posts. The covered area could be screened, if desired.

A roomy walk-in pantry fills one corner of the step-efficient kitchen. Standing at the double sink, kitchen workers can gaze across the patio at the rear yard, or scan the gathering spaces to keep tabs on activities.

The Glenhaven’s owners’ suite is down a passageway on the right of the entry hall, just past the den and coat closet. Suite amenities include a roomy walk-in closet and a two-section bathroom with dual vanity. A storage closet and a utility room that links with the garage are accessed via the owners’ suite hallway.

From the front, the Forsythia has the appearance of a typical contemporary ranch-style home. A bird’s-eye view of the floor plan tells a different story. A large, dramatic hexagonal space forms its core, with wings jutting out to the right and left.

This home offers broad vistas to the rear, making it ideal for construction as a vacation retreat with a view. But it is equally well-suited for construction in a more urban setting, with a view of a nicely landscaped rear yard.

Framed out twin columns support the roof of the lofty, covered porch. Double doors open into a high-ceilinged entry, naturally illuminated by a wide transom. An art niche is ahead and to the right; an open passageway is ahead and to the left. It leads directly into the bright and spacious great room, where six pie-shaped ceiling sections slope up to one central apex.

Windows, wide and high, fill most of the three rear wall sections, offering stunning vistas from anywhere in the great room. A free-standing wood stove provides warmth when needed.

Counters wrap around four sides of the G-shaped kitchen. One long, angled counter is open to the great room, while a raised eating bar rims another peninsular counter. Sink and dishwasher are built in on the kitchen side.

The Forsythia’s owners’ suite entirely filling the left wing, where it serves as a quiet retreat. Sliding doors in the vaulted sleeping area provide direct access to the rear deck. Bathroom features include: a roomy walk-in closet, a spa tub with a shower head, and a totally private toilet.

With spring around the corner, now is the perfect time to consider a home or property improvement project. If you are in love with your home but want to get more out of your yard, The House Plan Company has put together a collection of accessory structures that help you make the most of your backyard. From detached work or hobby spaces, to luxury outdoor living, to guest accommodations these plans are sure to have you running to your own backyard.

Plan 70763

The Olsen Pavillion offers homeowners a luxurious covered outdoor living room. A fireplace is centered in the space providing warmth on colder fall hangouts or a pleasant glow to carry the party late into the evening on a summer day. The door to the left opens to a large storage room that offers flexibility to homeowners to function as either a place to store their pool equipment or other yard maintenance tools. If storage isn’t needed it would be easy to modify the plan to include some windows to allow the space to serve as a hobby room or exercise studio.

Plan 23766

If working remotely has become a permanent option and the kitchen table is needed for its original purpose, the Maxwell is a charming farmhouse inspired detached office. At 390 square feet, this detached home office offers a luxurious workspace that is richly windowed. A bar along the back wall opens to a passthrough bar so that this space can work hard with you Monday through Friday then enhance entertaining and relaxing on the weekends. On the right side a ladder leads up to an open loft.

Plan 10955

The Barndomimium trend is relatively new to the residential design scene and has taken the industry by storm. A great choice for rural properties, Plan 10955 blends some of the traditional roots of the style with contemporary upgrades. Starting out as a style rooted in farming and rural living, barndominiums started out with more of a commercial purpose. Fast forward to today and the Barndominium takes the classic exterior elements of a traditional barn and wrap it around a modern floor plan intended for two legged residences. Plan 10955 honors those original roots on the main floor which is primary filled with horse stables, storage for tack and feed, and a central barn. The back right corner of the floor plan starts to transition to the 1585 square foot residence. On the first floor is the mud room with laundry appliances and a full bathroom. Upstairs the floor plan is designed for privacy. A landing at the top of the stairs is cozy and transitions to a hall that leads past two bedrooms, including the owners’ suite which boasts vaulted ceilings and a private bath. The end of the hall opens to the great room. The living room is open to the kitchen.

Plan 33277

Hobbyists will appreciate the Maywood design. The traditional exterior allows it to pair perfectly with almost any primary residence. This multi-purpose building provides the opportunity for additional storage along with a vaulted space that can be used as a shop, art studio, exercise room, or whatever else suits.
