Cadence charms, both outside and in

Like the measured beats of a pleasing melody, tapered columns link wooden rails to enclose a wide covered porch that wraps around three sides of the Cadence. These, along with other nostalgic Craftsman cottage design elements, attract admiring looks to this small ranch-style home.

Its compact size and floor plan make it economical to build and maintain, a clear plus for both first-time home buyers and empty nesters. As a single-level home, it could easily be adapted for wheelchair accessibility.

Through front and side windows, abundant natural light washes into a gathering space that fills the entire right side.  Up front, a media cabinet lines one wall of the great room up front, which flows into the dining area behind it. At the rear of the dining area, tapered columns, similar to those bounding the covered porch, flank the wide cased opening that segues into the kitchen.

A flush eating bar rims two sides of the large work island that sits at the center of the kitchen. Cabinets, appliances and the sink are ranged along two sides of the room, while a roomy walk-in pantry fills another corner.

The mud hall/laundry room behind the kitchen links to both the two-car garage and the rambling covered porch. Via this mud hall, outside dining is easily arranged, and groceries can be comfortably and safely brought in from the car to the kitchen.

Private rooms fill the left side: two bathrooms, plus what could be either three bedrooms, or two bedrooms and a study/office. In the owners’ suite, a sliding door offers access to a private bathroom with a tub/shower combo, dual vanity, and fully enclosed toilet. Closets line most of one wall in the Cadence’s study/office
