Happy Holidays from Associated Designs!
The horizontal lines and low-pitched roofs are classic of a prairie house plan, but little else about the Patagonia is by the book.
Drive up through a vaulted porte-cochere, wide enough for two vehicles and anchored by posts. A striking exterior of lap siding with alternating exposures and cultured stone veneer rises beneath composition shingle roofing, for an eye-catching effect. Open the front door and step into an airlock entry with a coat closet and bench, protecting the interior ahead from the elements. A pair of barn doors slide open to reveal a foyer leading straight ahead to the heart of the home: the two-story vaulted living room.
Warm up in front of a corner wood stove that heats the spacious living room and unwind with family, in front of an entertainment center broad enough for a widescreen television, a sound system and much more. An open floor plan connects the living room to an adjoining kitchen complete with an island and eating bar. The island contains the kitchen sink, dishwasher, and trash, which opens up two full walls of counter space broken only by the range stove and refrigerator. Even more food storage space can be found in the walk-in pantry with wraparound shelves. And a wide nook extending off of the kitchen provides an ideal space for quick meals, beneath skylights that stream in natural light from above.
Open a sliding door between the two rows of kitchen counters to reveal the large dining room, which can also be reached off of the foyer. Windows offer front-facing views to take in while enjoying formal dinners with family or friends. And there's a lot more space to get creative with food preparation outside. Back through the living room, sliding glass doors open out to a covered patio that wraps around much of the rear of the home, and includes a barbecue area with a door opening into the kitchen.
A hallway extends from the left side of the kitchen past a half bath, a utility room with a washer and dryer, and a mud room, before reaching the three-car garage. The garage can also be accessed from the front driveway, or from a walkway off of the rear patio.
Head back to the foyer and down another hallway towards the right side of the floor plan. Double doors open to a versatile studio, which could be converted to a home office or guest bedroom. The hallway ends at a door that opens to the grand, vaulted owners' suite, with two walls of windows and a door opening out to a private, covered patio. The luxurious owners' bath features dual vanities, a soaking tub, walk-in shower, and private toilet, plus a large walk-in closet.
A staircase back near the hallway leads up to the Patagonia's second floor, where a balcony looks out to the living room below. Pass a large playroom to reach the two upstairs bedrooms, each with ample closet space and direct access to the jack-n-jill bathroom complete with a combination shower and tub.
