Happy Holidays from Associated Designs!
Prairie home plans evoke a Midwestern practicality. Low-slung, cantilevered roofs cover open floor plans, with an abundance of windows bathing each room in natural sunlight. But the Carbondale redefines the prairie home with more than a few contemporary twists.
Pitched roofs alter the sight line and add modern flair to this two-story retreat, designed for a downhill sloping lot with views. Stone veneer posts flank a front door lined with side and top windows.
Inside, doors to the left of the vaulted foyer open to a den with front and side facing windows, making this an ideal conversion into a guest suite, office or library. The room features a two-door closet, with a full bathroom nearby.
Departing from conventional floor plans, the foyer opens up ahead into a vaulted great room that seamlessly flows into an adjoining kitchen and dining room. Breaking down walls opens this up into a central gathering area that encourages shared cooking, dining and leisure time in front of the great room’s fireplace. The kitchen features an island and counter space wrapping around two walls, plus a walk-in pantry. Windows spaced throughout the great room, dining room and kitchen distribute sunlight throughout.
Step out a sliding glass door from the great room to find even more space on the rear deck. A dramatic, cantilevered roof shields much of this elevated deck from the elements. Running the length of the home, the balcony is designed to take in sweeping views just steps from the warm interior.
The open living and dining areas contrast with the privacy of the luxurious owners’ suite. Located on the opposite side of the home from the kitchen, a door to the left of the great room opens into the suite. Windows line two walls in the bedroom, while a sliding door opens to the large owners’ bath, complete with a bathtub, double sink, dual-headed shower, private toilet, and a spacious walk-in closet.
Back in the great room, a door past the kitchen and adjacent utility room opens to the Carbondale’s large garage. The great room also contains a staircase leading down to the roomy and versatile lower level, anchored by a large family room that features a second fireplace. The family room is also loaded with storage space. Off to the right, opposite-facing doors open to a pair of bedrooms, separated by a shared bathroom. These bedrooms are on the opposite side of the home from the owners’ suite one floor above, maximizing privacy for the owners.
An unfinished basement is on the other side of the family room. And a sliding glass door opens out from the family room to a covered ground-floor patio, directly beneath the elevated rear deck.
